Renewable Energy Industry Cluster

In 2009, as part of the Mobilize Northern Maine’s development process, an in-depth analysis began of the  renewable energy industry of northern Maine. Renewable energy, which is defined as energy which comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal which are naturally replenished, was identified as a key industry during the first stages of the Mobilize Northern Maine assessment process.

This industry was chosen to be analyzed because of its high potential for growth based on the wind and  biomass resources in the region; and the relatively high wages and benefits associated with those industries. The industry analysis was conducted by ViTAL Economy, along with a leadership team composed of industry executives and professionals from the Aroostook Partnership for Progress (APP), Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC). The primary goal of the analysis was to identify strategies to fully leverage economic opportunities associated with the renewable energy industry for the region.

The Renewable Energy leadership team is focusing on developing economic opportunities in the markets related to excess energy/greenhouse agriculture, cellulosic biomass, and community wind power. The ultimate goal is to create a Renewable Energy Economy utilizing all forms of alternative energy sources and being an innovation leader to capture and retain wealth to stimulate the economy. Working groups have been established to identity and implement niche market strategies indicated in the final report.
