| Information Technology Industry Cluster In 2009, as part of the Mobilize Northern Maine’s development process, an in-depth analysis began of the information technology industry of northern Maine. Information technology, which includes operation centers, is defined as the use of electronic computers and computer software to securely convert, store, protect, process, transmit, input, output and retrieve information, was identified as a key industry during the first stages of the Mobilize Northern Maine assessment process. The industry analysis was conducted by ViTAL Economy, along with a cluster team composed of industry executives and professionals from the Aroostook Partnership for Progress (APP), Northern Maine Development Commission (NMDC). The primary goal of the analysis was to identify strategies to fully leverage economic opportunities associated with the renewable energy industry for the region. The niche markets identified in the IT/Operations cluster include healthcare data management, data storage centers, finance/accounting services, and insurance services. By leveraging the region’s unique resources, the IT/Operations industry cluster wants to position northern Maine to become the premier rural technology hub in the United States where innovation and opportunity attract wealth and people to the region. They propose a Northern Maine IT Outsourcing Collaborative with attention to telecom infrastructure opportunities. Working groups have been established to identity and implement niche market strategies indicated in the final report. Information Technology Cluster Team
